Watch: Melissa McCarthy Slams Critic Over Body Image Insult
Preach it, Melissa.
With the release of “Tammy” there came a slew of negative feedback. Much of it was centered on Melissa McCarthy’s appearance in the film which was rather haggard and unusual for a Hollywood actress. The gist of one critic’s remarks was that McCarthy was only a good actress when she was attractive. When the opportunity presented itself, McCarthy (respectfully and calmly) let him have it.
When McCarthy appeared on Ellen, she expressed what went down. She later met the man who wrote this particular review at the Toronto Film Festival where he admitted he was the one who wrote it. After learning he had children of his own, she told him, “I hope you don’t have a daughter.” As it turns out, he does and McCarthy asked him what would he think if his words were applied to his child.
McCarthy makes the point, and very well so, that remarks like this, no matter how small, all contribute to the bigger issue at hand. Being unattractive can now cost you your place in your career? That’s bull.
